Take Out The Trash

Take Out The Trash

I remember coming home one hot humid afternoon being welcomed by a horrible stench! No it was not my body odor but it was a full trash bag we forgot to take out. I immediately took the trash out because there is no way we would be able to focus or get comfortable with that odor attacking our sense of smell.

One helpful way to stay productive and to be able to keep taming our time is to “take out the trash”. You might not have actual trash bags of rotting trashing lying around, if you do please throw it out now, but we may have disorganized areas in your workspace.

There was an article in January of 2011 edition of The Journal of Neuroscience that published the results of study at the Princeton University of Neuroscience Institute. If I would to sum up the article it talked about having a disorganized environment can hinder your ability to focus. It would be like sitting in a room filled with the smell of rotting trash, there is no way you would be able to fully focus on the task at hand. Your mind will be screaming to you to get rid of the smell first before it can focus on the next task.

So what does this mean? It means for you to truly focus you need to do some cleaning up. Here are 3 areas that you can begin to “take out the trash” to become more productive.

1. Clean up your desk

If you work in a cubicle or home office make sure to clean up and organize your desk. Take some time and throw out those old scrap papers, post its from 2 years ago, and don’t forget to throw out that apple you left in your drawer for 4 months already.

2. Clean up your desktop

If your like me my desktop can become so cluttered. Different image files, word documents, web clippings, movie clips, and the list goes on. After a while your whole screen can be covered with “trash”. Start creating folders to better organize your desktop. It will not only help you focus but also get you more organized.

3. Clean yourself up

This is mainly for people who work from home. It is way to easy to just jump out of bed and head to your home office and start working. The only problem with that is mentally you have not transitioned from sleep to work. Treat you work hours just like you would be going into an office. Take a shower, clean up, dress up, then start your productive day with focus.

Remember that you can’t just do this once! Make sure that you “take out the trash” every single day! No go out and stay focused taming your time!
